From 7 to 11 March, Malta organised the CEPOL course 49/2016 “Training for SIRENE officers". 28 officers from EU Member States and three from associated countries came together to learn about various aspects of SIRENE-related work as well as to discuss shared issues and good practices in this field.

The Schengen Information System II (SIS II) allows competent authorities in EU Member States to cooperate and exchange information to ensure the maintenance of public security. Member States exchange information on alerts through SIRENE Bureaux and in accordance with the rules contained in the SIRENE Manual.

During the course, trainers from Denmark, France, Italy and Portugal delivered lectures in this field and facilitated group work and exchange of views among participants. Experts from the European Commission and eu-LISA also delivered presentations.

The course included discussions and workshops on the practical application of the SIRENE rules, the future of SIS II, the application of standard SIRENE procedures to the different alerts and functionalities, the correct use of SIRENE forms, data protection, and the role of the European Commission and eu-LISA.
