The Portuguese Guarda Nacional Republicana organised CEPOL course 67/2014 “European Internal Security Strategy” on 8-10 October 2014 at the School of Guard (Queluz, Portugal). The activity was attended by law enforcement officers from 25 EU Member States and Associated Countries. Its aim was to prepare the target group with proper knowledge and competences to assist and support the EU and their national authorities on the implementation of a European Internal Security Strategy (EU ISS).

Highly acknowledged experts and trainers on internal security strategy delivered several lectures. Working groups were organised with the aim of exchanging experiences and discussing the priorities of the EU ISS.

During the first day of the activity, theoretical definitions concerning the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice and cooperation strategies were addressed. Lectures concerning EU bodies and agencies such as Frontex, Europol, Eurojust and the Committee on Operational Cooperation on Internal Security (COSI) were delivered on the second day. The results of the working groups were presented on the last day. It was an interesting and added-value exercise that showed how difficult it is to have a common approach on internal security strategy at a European level. However, it was agreed that cooperation is essential to be able to combat threats in this field.

The course was formally closed with a ceremony where certificates were delivered to the course participants.
