A CEPOL Information Seminar, in English, took place at the Police College in Bramshill, UK, on 5 -23 March 2012. The aim of the seminar was to facilitate and increase European police cooperation amongst the Member States and is one of several such activities which are also delivered in Spanish, German and French. A further English language seminar will be delivered in Ireland latter this year (see Calendar of Events). The purpose of said seminars is to share knowledge of European policing, create long term networks and to promote language development of European Union police personnel.

This popular event was ‘full’ with a capacity 30 participants from 15 different Member States. Two trainers from Reading University provided constant language development during the seminar’s three intensive weeks. Expert speakers from a wide variety of specialities addressed the course covering amongst others topics such as Child exploitation, Missing Persons, Serious Crime Analysis, Specialist Search and last but not least Legislation.

Each participant was required to deliver a prepared presentation, in English, to the group.

Weekend activities included visits to London and Warwick Castle during which participants tested their newly enhanced language skills.

Anonymous feedback from participants highlights that the seminar was enjoyed and appreciated:

  • “A useful network of European colleagues”
  • “A lot of brand new information and connections”
  • “My communication skills have improved significantly”
  • “It really was a big event in my career”
  • “Many of the participants said they 'have made good useful contacts'”
  • “Different cultures, legal systems and new terminology”
