COSI: HoOPS highlights CEPOL’s training offer regarding drug trafficking
02 May 2022

On 27-28 April, the CEPOL Head of Operations (HoOPS), Ms Mailis Pukonen represented the agency in Versailles at the informal meeting of the Standing Committee on Operational Cooperation on Internal Security (COSI), organised under the French Presidency of the Council of the EU.

One of the main points on the agenda of the meeting was the fight against drug trafficking, covering maritime surveillance, the digital dimension of drug trafficking, freezing and confiscation of criminal assets and international cooperation. Ms Pukonen provided an overview of last year’s training activities and to highlight relevant learning opportunities in the CEPOL 2022 training offer.

‘On the topic of drug trafficking, in 2021 CEPOL trained more than 1.380 law enforcement officials from 59 countries, with a satisfaction rate of 97%. In the 2022 training portfolio we have planned 19 activities, both onsite and online, covering important elements of this complex phenomenon, such as drug trafficking methods, illicit laboratory dismantling, cross-border drug investigations. Furthermore, the CEPOL Exchange Programme will offer law enforcement officials the possibility, for the period of one week, to exchange insights and good practices with their counterparts in another country’, noted Ms Pukonen.

The Head of Operations also underlined the importance of drug trafficking, as one of the highest training priorities, notably within the scope of CEPOL’s externally funded projects, and explained how CEPOL contributes to building trust and enhancing cooperation with the beneficiary countries of these projects.
