The aim of the webinar is to raise awareness about the European Commission's initiative which aims to foster a common approach to criminalisation of hate speech and hate crime, with a view in particular to ensure a consistent protection of victims of such acts across the EU. Also, to deepen the knowledge of the current legal framework in the Member States as well as of the scale, nature and impact of hate speech and hate crime.
At the end of the webinar the participant will be able to:
- Acquire knowledge about the results of the European Commissions’ 2021 study providing a detailed mapping of Member State legal framework on the criminalisation of hate speech and hate crime and an in-depth analysis of the information and data collected concerning the scale, nature and impact of hate speech and hate crime in the Member States;
- Describe the approach and characteristics of the 2021 Commissions’ initiative to extend the list of EU crimes to hate speech and hate crime which aims to contribute to respond to the cross-border nature, the scale and the increasing spread of these phenomena;
- Recognise the added value of a common approach to criminalisation of hate speech and hate crime at EU level, in particular with a view to ensure a consistent protection of victims of such acts across the EU.
