Online Course 88/2021: OSINT - Focus on fake news and disinformation leading to extremism
Date:
17 May 2021 to 28 May 2021
Organiser:
CEPOL
Description:

The overall objective of the training activity is to enhance practitioners’ performance by sensitizing them so they are able to distinguish between open-source intelligence (OSINT) on the one hand and on the other hand fake news that can lead to extremism, including the role of social media in mobilising previously unpopular extremist movements.

Learning strategy is focused to enhance the capacity of European law enforcement officers, in their investigations, to introduce best practices and lessons learned to help them distinguish between OSINT on the one hand and on the other hand fake news that can lead to extremism, together with the role of social media in mobilising previously unpopular extremist movements.

The learning process highlights a learner-centred approach and will consist of:

  • Independent Learning: reviewing case studies, watching webinars, listening short videos (podcasts), studying reading material (25 hours)
  • Contact Learning via online forums: forum discussion with other participants, exchange of good practices and group as-signments (5 hours)

The course will be delivered online over a period of 3 weeks, between 17 - 28 May 2021. While there is no specific time slot when participants shall be available for completing the course tasks, they should follow the course continuously. This is important as they will need to exchange their ideas with other participants virtually and complete small tasks/assignments then share the results of these tasks between each other and debate them collectively. Completion of the course would require 2-3 hours investment / working day from the attending participant during the length of two weeks.

The course will be held entirely in English, therefore it is essential that nominated officials possess appropriate language skills (at least B2 level). The entire activity will be carried out online on CEPOL’s Law Enforcement Education Platform (LEEd), hence the physical presence of participants will not be required.

No special experience is required from participants but it is important that they'll remain open-minded, active and will be willing to share their ideas/experience during the learning process.
