CEPOL Seminar 75a/2009 ‘Train the Trainers – Learning Methods Step 1’ took place in Nicosia, Cyprus on 25 - 29 May 2009.

The seminar provided an opportunity for trainers from 16 European countries to meet and work together in an effort to create effective learning environments with a European dimension.

Through group discussions, the participants identified diversity among the European Member States and discussed common standards in the delivery of CEPOL learning activities.

In addition to other topics, the sessions tackled adult learning; setting objectives; the choice of specific teaching methodologies, their effectiveness and appropriateness to specific contexts and groups; as well as the use of learning methods and strategies.

Added to this, the seminar also focused on continuous quality improvement, through discussions and use of evaluation and peer review.

The two module seminar was based upon the active participation and commitment of the 26 participants as they had to complete assignments during the course and in-between the two modules.

Through their presentations, the experienced members of the Working Group on Learning facilitated the participants´ training, helping them with their in-between group assignments.

Cyprus Police Academy organised the seminar with the support of Spain and the Working Group on Learning.

The next module (Train the Trainers – Learning Methods Step 2) will take place in Spain in October 2009.

At his closing speech, the Deputy Chief of Cyprus Police Michael Papageorgiou said: “We live in demanding and rapidly changing societies in which the role and duties of police trainers are constantly re-shaped and re-defined. In your efforts to adapt to new standards, meet the challenges involved and provide your learners with the highest possible level of training, you will recognize the importance of seminars like this.”
