Between 8-12 July 2019, the Federal Police Academy of the Ministry of the Interior in Austria implemented the CEPOL residential course 100/2019 "Management of Diversity – Step 2" at the Police Academy in Vienna, Austria.

This course aimed to develop or increase the capacity to acknowledge and accept diversity (knowledge - ratio), to value it (attitude - emotion) and to include it or deal professionally with diversity-related issues (skills – action) in a Law Enforcement context.

Twenty-six participants from 18 different EU Member States and Turkey attended the course. Throughout the activity, two trainers encouraged the participants to share their personal experiences and showcase their best practices.

The training session on Conscious-Conversation for Conscious actions implemented via four mini-workshops was one of the highlights of the course. Four "friends" representing different minority groups within society, coming from a diverse ethnic or religious background, sexual orientation, or specific physical and psychological needs, were invited to share their life experience with the participants. That required their confidence and courage to share and engage.

One of the participants later stated:

I've never been on a course which was so well prepared and organized. It was completely different … made us feel and think, inspired us to expand our attitude and open our minds.

The tours on Migration as well as Poverty and Homelessness were another highlight of the training. During the guided sessions, participants visited those affected and had a chance to listen to their first-hand stories. It helped them approach those in difficult life situations with empathy.

Apart from the study visits, participants were especially grateful for the ability to expand their professional networks and use of professional platforms to stay in touch and further the exchange experience.
