The Portuguese Guarda Nacional Republicana, through the School of Guard and the Intervention Unit, from 31st of August to 3rd of September, organised the first edition of the CEPOL Course 70/2021 Public Order and Crowd Management - Security during Major Events, under the umbrella of the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training (CEPOL), in Lisbon.

The course aimed to facilitate and improve cooperation between EU Member States and their law enforcement agencies, exchange of information and increase knowledge by sharing experience in the area of ​​law enforcement and public security, sharing and reflecting on the recent evolution of crowd and riots control forces, regarding their characteristics, structure, organisation, equipment, doctrine and level of engagement in operational situations, scenarios such as major events, organised crime, cross-border cooperation and attacks by lone terrorists, among others current criminal activities.

It also aimed to contribute to increase the skills of specialists in maintaining public order, taking advantage of the national and international experience, lessons identified and learned, to support an integrated development of this type of forces, aiming to be collectively better prepared for future challenges.

This CEPOL onsite training course was attended by 25 trainees from different EU Member States and Third Countries, such as Cyprus, Spain, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo*, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden and Portugal.

The course also featured a joint exercise between the Portuguese Guarda Nacional Republicana and Polícia de Segurança Pública, demonstrating the national capacity to face up to crowd and riots management scenarios.
