From 30 March to 3 April 2015, the Scuola di Perfezionamento per le Forze di Polizia in Rome (Italy) organised the CEPOL course 24/2015 on fighting money laundering. 29 participants from European law enforcement agencies attended the course. They had the opportunity to learn relevant investigation techniques and to explore options for international cooperation in this field.

Experts from EUROPOL, Austria, Greece and Hungary gave contributions on investigative methods and led several working groups. Furthermore, experts from the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Bank of Italy, the Guardia di Finanza and the Transcrime University delivered presentations on strategic ways of combatting money laundering. Participants actively took part in the discussions held at the course.

Kurt Brückl, expert from the Federal Criminal Intelligence Service of the Austrian Ministry of Interior, commented on the outcomes of this activity: “In order to tackle this issue, small countries like Austria and Switzerland - primary targets for money laundering – should contribute to the investigations by freezing assets. At the same time, they should receive support from those countries holding useful information”.

This CEPOL course has stressed the importance of international cooperation, of learning from each another and networking”, Mr. Brückl added. He also suggested that “more working groups and presentations of practical cases would be welcome for the next edition of this activity”.
