CEPOL among 15 EU science chiefs stressing the role of research in good policy-making

EU science chiefs or highest-ranking scientific officers representing 15 members^* of the European Union Agencies Network on Scientific Advice (EU-ANSA) have reaffirmed the central role of EU agencies in supporting research and translating scientific knowledge into evidence-based policymaking, through a joint statement.

Drawing on experience from recent crises, such as COVID-19, the 15 members of the EU-ANSA network highlight how EU agencies contribute across the research knowledge cycle – from identifying policy-relevant knowledge gaps and shaping research priorities, to supporting the uptake of research results in regulatory science and policy implementation.

They underline the importance of inter- and transdisciplinary research, including within the One Health framework, to to address complex and interconnected challenges such as climate change, emerging health threats and geopolitical pressures. Reflecting the interconnected nature of today’s security challenges, the Justice and Home Affairs agencies within EU-ANSA also encourage a One Safety approach, encompassing multiple domains that affect the safety and well-being of citizens and communities in the EU, such as technological innovation and cybercrime and democratic and economic instability.

The 15 members of the EU-ANSA network welcome the proposed Horizon Europe 2028–2034 programme and call for the proactive involvement of EU agencies in future research programming, recognising their collective expertise, scientific networks and role in strengthening trust in science and public decision-making.
