CEPOL Knowledge Centre delivers training in Malta on SIRENE II

Course 51-2025 SIRENE

The CEPOL Knowledge Centre on Law enforcement cooperation, information exchange and interoperability, organised the onsite course  51/2025/ONS: ’SIRENE II – Advanced’ from 4 to 7 November 2025, hosted and supported by the Malta Police. The event offered a unique opportunity to celebrate both the 40 years of Schengen and the 30 years of the Schengen Information System (SIS).

The course brought together 31 law enforcement professionals from 24 EU MS (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden), four Associated Countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) and Europol.

The training activity focused on the exchange of supplementary information with Europol, the new SIS information alerts and the further processing of supplementary information related to terrorist offences.

Seven distinguished experts from the European Commission, Europol, Austria, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Malta and Poland led the workshops and panel discussions covering topics such as: the national implementation requirements for the information alert; the enhanced support by Europol to the objectives of SIS & to SIRENE work; best practices for sharing information with Europol terrorism-related hits and other supplementary information; the quality of hit information – Article 36, discreet/inquiry/specific checks and the further exchange of information between Member States on terrorism-related hits.

The results of the training activity were presented to the Heads of SIRENE during their meeting in Copenhagen on 9 - 11 November 2025, and will also be presented at the SIS-SIRENE Committee in Brussels on 10 December 2025.  They will also be taken into consideration for the overall evaluation of the SIS Recast Regulations by the European Commission.
