Police Academy of the Czech Republic in Prague

From 23rd to 26th September the CEPOL residential activity 84/2019 with a topic of Radicalisation was held in Prague, the Czech Republic. The activity was organised in cooperation with Police of the Czech Republic and Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic. The overall aim of the course was to familiarise law enforcement officers dealing with radicalisation with the latest insights into new forms, signs and ways of radicalisation.

26 participants were sent from 17 Member States, 1 participant from Turkey and 1 from Georgia. This activity was also supported by EUROPOL and the Belgian Police with their high quality speakers, who delivered their presentations.

The main topics of the programme were:

  • Definitions of radicalisation, (violent) extremism
  • Different aspects of the radicalisation phenomenon
  • Instruments and expertise of EUROPOL
  • Radicalisation in prison facilities
  • Dealing with radicalisation
  • Dilemmas and limitations in dealing with radicalisation
  • The current debate and policy making on relation to the nexus of crime and radicalisation

The participants were also taken to the Government office to meet the representatives of the non-profit government organisation, which aims to reduce the hateful behaviour in society. Some of the participants were very actively taking part in the discussion. After the visit the participants had a chance to see the Czech capital city from other perspective during a networking event, where they also had a chance to discuss in a less formal way.

Some comments from the participants:

I learnt interesting info about radicalisation and the presentations were up to date. Meeting new colleagues and networking with them is very important.

Great study visit, this was the highlight of the course.
