Twenty-five police officers took part in the recent ‘Police Cooperation and Europol’ course, held on 12-16 November 2007 at the Police Training Centre in Traiskirchen, Lower Austria. The officers who attended the course were mainly from criminal investigation departments and came from 18 different Member States.

Run by .SIAK (Sicherheitsakademie) of the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior and supported by Europol, the course was based on the Europol Common Curricula developed in 2005. The Common Curriculum on Police Cooperation and Europol aims to support CEPOL partners to establish and develop national and international training about Europol and its role in the international law enforcement cooperation.

In May 2007, a ‘Train the Trainer’ seminar for the implementation of the Europol Common Curricula was organised in Hungary. Austria later decided to organise the ‘Police Cooperation and Europol’ as an Awareness seminar, based on the CC Europol but with the aim to make senior police officers more aware of services EUROPOL can offer to combat cross border crime.

Europol handles criminal intelligence and is the European Law Enforcement Organisation that aims at improving the effectiveness and cooperation of the competent authorities in the Member States in preventing and combating terrorism, unlawful drug trafficking and other serious forms of international organised crime.

Course participant, Giedrius Strikulis, Lithuania said: “I attended the course because I am one of the police officers assigned to keep relations between Border Guards and the Europol National Unit of Lithuania. I am completely satisfied with the knowledge I gained during this CEPOL course and I will share this knowledge with my colleagues when I am back in Lithuania.”

Sandro Frank, Course Manager, .SIAK said: “Together with the Europol experts, and as a result evaluation of the course, we believe that it is necessary to organise both activities each year. The ‘Police Cooperation and Europol´ as a `Train the Trainer’ seminar to support the implementation process of the Europol Common Curricula, and the ‘Police Cooperation and Europol´ as an `awareness seminar’ to make senior police officers on the operative level more aware of services Europol offers and also to provide an excellent forum for the exchange of information and experiences between different Member States.”
