EMPACT financial crime working group kick-off connects EU and southern partners

The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training (CEPOL) has established a working group focused on financial crime, bringing together specialists to collaborate under the EUROMED Police project and within the frame of the European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats (EMPACT). The group officially began its work with a kick-off meeting held on 8–9 April 2026.
The establishment of this thematic working group reflects a shared commitment to enhance cooperation between the European Union and its Southern Neighbourhood partners in addressing serious and organised crime. Aligned with the EMPACT priorities, the working group is designed to facilitate information sharing, connect operational and training communities and promote more coordinated responses to common threats.
The kick-off meeting focused on key areas of financial crime affecting both regions, notably money laundering and asset recovery, as well as the growing role of cryptocurrencies in criminal activities. Participants exchanged insights on national challenges and presented practical examples of how these threats are being addressed at country level. Contributions from EMPACT delegates and Europol provided an overview of ongoing operational actions, helping to frame discussions within a broader strategic context.
Looking ahead, the EUROMED Police project will build on these initial discussions to deliver targeted activities, including specialised training, workshops and further exchanges for law enforcement officials from partner countries.
Through initiatives such as this working group, EUROMED Police continues to support closer alignment between EU priorities and partner country needs, reinforcing a collaborative and sustained response to transnational organised crime.
