EMPACT course on THB – Labour exploitation organised in Larnaca

CEPOL activity 09/2024/ONS: Trafficking in Human Beings (THB) – Labour Exploitation was organised by the Cyprus Police, in cooperation with the European Labour Authority (ELA). It took place from 12 to 15 November 2024 in Larnaca, Cyprus.
The opening ceremony on 12 November 2024 included speeches by Mr. Marios Hartsiotis, Minister of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus, Mr. Costas Veis, Superintendent B', Deputy Director of the Cyprus Police Academy and newly voted Chair of the CEPOL Management Board, and Ms. Ileana Stănică, representing the European Labour Authority (ELA).
In his opening speech, Mr. Veis noted the importance of combatting human trafficking, one of the priorities of the European Union, and explained that a variety of cooperation mechanisms have been developed between the competent authorities of the Member States.
Human trafficking is constantly taking new forms, and law enforcement authorities are asked to take drastic measures in order to deal with this heinous crime,
he stated.
Ms Stănică, speaking on behalf of the European Labour Authority (ELA), underlined how the ongoing and successful cooperation between CEPOL, the Cyprus Police Academy and ELA offers police personnel and labour inspectors the opportunity to train together and share best practices.
During the training, experts from Cyprus Police, the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, the French Gendarmerie, the Spanish Guardia Civil, the Greek Police, the Dutch Public Prosecutor's Office, the German Federal Police, Europol and the European Labor Authority (ELA) delivered lectures and moderated the workshops.
The training was attended by 28 participants from 22 EU Member states and candidate countries, including 20 labour inspectors.
