Minister of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus opens CEPOL course on “Trafficking in Human Beings – Labor exploitation”

The onsite training activity of the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training (CEPOL) on “Trafficking in Human Beings – Labor Exploitation”, which was organised by the Cyprus Police, took place from 20 to 23 September 2022 in Larnaca, Cyprus.

The opening ceremony on 20 September 2022 was addressed by the Minister of Justice and Public Order of Cyprus, Mrs. Stefi DrakouArrow icon, followed by speeches of the Chief of Police, Mr. Stelios PapatheodorouArrow icon, and the Director of the Cyprus Police Academy, Mr. Themistos Arnaoutis.

As Minister Drakou mentioned in her opening speech, combating human trafficking is one of the priorities of the European Union, which has developed a variety of cooperation mechanisms, between the competent authorities of the member states of the Union and with the authorities of other countries, for this purpose.

In his speech, the Chief of Police said that the crime of human trafficking is constantly taking new forms, with the Law Enforcement Authorities being asked to take drastic measures to deal with it. The Director of the Cyprus Police Academy, in turn, added that through the specific program, both the lecturers and the participants will have the opportunity to analyse and examine best practices for dealing with this serious problem.

During the training activity, experts from Cyprus Police, the Ministry of Labor & Social Insurance, the French and Spanish Gendarmerie, the Greek Police, the Dutch Public Prosecutor's Office, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Europol and the European Labor Agency (ELA) presented lectures and moderated the workshops.

The training was attended by 35 participants from 18 EU Member states, one Candidate country and one EU Agency, and among them were judges, prosecutors, labor inspectors, police officers and border guards.
