3066/2026/WEB 'Overview of malware analysis'

The aim of this webinar is to strengthen the ability of law enforcement officers regarding malware, its typology and how to analyse it. There is a wide range of malware that can disrupt electronic devices and even compromise the security of information systems. Law enforcement agencies need experts who can understand and analyse these different types of malware but also gather evidence and extract data (IP address, URL, alias) to pursue cases through legal channels.
This webinar covers the basics of malware analysis with targeted and accessible content, supported by case examples drawn from real investigations. Participants will be able to outline the different types of malware, the practical methods used to investigate malware attacks and the basics of cryptography used by ransomware. Participants will see how to analyse malware (the different types of analysis, what to look for in malware, understand the technique), how to use OSINT in a malware investigation and how to set up an analysis lab.
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Understand different types of malware.
- Outline how to proceed to analyse malware (different types of analysis, what to look for in malware, understand the technique).
- Use OSINT in a malware investigation.
- Understand the basics of cryptography used by ransomware.
- Summarise the steps to set up an analysis lab.
EMPACT training activity

Combatting new forms of organised crime requires more cooperation between police and gendarmes, customs officers, border guards, judges, and prosecutors. EU institutions, agencies and Member States work together to tackle organised and serious international crime through a permanent and key instrument: the European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats (EMPACT).
CEPOL plays a crucial role in the EMPACT mechanism through the provision of specialised training and the identification of training needs within each common security threat. Every year, CEPOL provides a comprehensive training package for each common EU crime priority consisting of onsite, online and exchange training activities.
