By exploring authentic illicit MDMA laboratories, you will learn about safety measures to take when approaching such hazardous MDMA manufacturing sites. If you are not yet an expert in identifying and investigating drug production, this eLesson is a good starting point. This will help you to deal with dangers related to MDMA production and will equip you to prevent and combat drug crimes.

This eLesson offers a virtual tour of an illicit MDMA laboratory in which two different production methods are shown. In addition, the eLesson has a glossary of MDMA-related terms and abbreviations. Learners can check their levels of understanding of the topic by considering a selection of quiz questions. Upon successful completion of the quiz, learners will obtain a badge as well as a certificate.

The main topics covered in this eLesson are:

  1. The fundamental characteristics of illicit synthetic MDMA laboratories, including the precursors, materials, methods and equipment used.
  2. The key steps involved in MDMA production: (1) synthesis; (2) distillation; (3) separation/purification; (4) crystallisation; (5) filtration; and (6) processing (drying, grinding/granulation, measuring and mixing, and tableting and packing).
  3. The safety hazards associated with illegal MDMA laboratories and the precautions that must be taken when investigating the premises.
  4. The procedures necessary for the crime-scene management and dismantling of illicit MDMA production sites.
