Online Course 2011/2023/ONL: English for law enforcement officials I.

The course aims to enable participants to achieve a Common European Framework of References for languages (CEFR) to the level of B1Arrow icon - independent user, in Police English Language.

The content of the course will be presented in the virtual learning environment where participants will engage in activities extending and practising their Police English Language skills. The curriculum content will focus on online self-paced, as well as, trainer guided activities and related assignments.

Reading, speaking, writing and listening skills will be practiced in the context of the following topics:

  1. Police station, equipment and officers
  2. Money laundering
  3. Cybercrime
  4. Europol
  5. Schengen
  6. Counter-terrorism
  7. EU Policy Cycle
  8. Joint Investigation Teams
  9. Immigration

Grammar teaching activities and official reports writing related to police specific communication will also be incorporated in the course.

The course will be task-based and it will use a varied teaching methodology which will include:

  • Self-paced activities
  • Teacher-learner and peer-to-peer interactions
  • Asynchronous (e.g. forum) as well as synchronous communication (e.g. chat, weekly online meetings)

The course is delivered online over a period of 8 weeks, from 17 April to 9 June 2023.  Within this period learners can reach knowledge of the English language on a CEFR B1 level of independent user by allocating 12-15 study hours per week. The course is fully online, there is no face-to-face element involved and learners can access its content from any mobile device that has internet connection. This course is fully flexible in terms of the study hours, learners can progress along the weekly activities at their own pace, however some real time sessions with the trainers are planned to take place.

In case you are interested to attend, please contact your local CEPOL National Unit / CEPOL National Contact Point as soon as possible. Deadline for nominations by CEPOL National Units: 30 March 2023.

Selection criteria for participants:

  • Employed in the police force or other law enforcement organisation/institute for at least 3 years;
  • Is in a work position which requires the use of English language in the framework of cross border police cooperation;
  • Has knowledge of the English language on a CEFR A2/B1 level of basic user, based on self-assessment by the participant.

Selected participants have to be registered to CEPOL's Law Enforcement Education platform LEEd where the online activity will take the place.
